Protecting a Vital, Limited Resource

Overview

Many Federal agencies use radio frequency spectrum to perform vital operations. NTIA manages the Federal government's use of spectrum, ensuring that America's domestic and international spectrum needs are met while making efficient use of this limited resource. NTIA carries out this responsibility with assistance and advice from the Interdepartment Radio Advisory Committee and by:

  • establishing and issuing policy regarding allocations and regulations governing the Federal spectrum use;
  • developing plans for the peacetime and wartime use of the spectrum;
  • preparing for, participating in, and implementing the results of international radio conferences;
  • assigning frequencies;
  • maintaining spectrum use databases;
  • reviewing Federal agencies' new telecommunications systems and certifying that spectrum will be available;
  • providing the technical engineering expertise needed to perform specific spectrum resources assessments and automated computer capabilities needed to carry out these investigations;
  • participating in all aspects of the Federal government's communications related emergency readiness activities; and
  • participating in Federal government telecommunications and automated information systems security activities.

Notice of 07/30/2020 CSMAC Meeting

This notice announces a public meeting of the Commerce Spectrum Management Advisory Committee (Committee). The Committee provides advice to the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information and NTIA on spectrum management policy matters. The meeting will be held July 30, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). This meeting will be conducted in an electronic format and open to the public via audio teleconference (866–652–3435 participant code 28570198).

NTIA Letter to FCC on Promoting Investment in the 3550-3700 MHz Band

NTIA and the Department of Defense (DoD) have worked closely with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as it implements the rules governing Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) in the 3550-3700 MHz (3.5 GHz) band in the above-referenced proceeding. The collaborative approach taken by government and industry to share the 3.5 GHz band has enabled commercial access to this primary mid-band spectrum for 5G deployments.  This letter is to notify you of changes to the protection criteria for eleven designated naval port locations.
