NATIVE AMERICAN RADIO OWNERSHIP
1997-98 SURVEY RESULTS

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration's August 1998 survey of minority ownership of full power commercial radio and television stations in the United States finds that Native American radio ownership at .02 percent. According to Census Bureau statistics released on July 30, 1998, Native Americans represent 0.9 percent of the total U.S. population. Native Americans currently own one (.02%) of 4,724 commercial AM radio stations and one (.02%) of commercial FM radio stations in the United States. Native American ownership of commercial broadcast stations has declined by a total of three since 1997. Since NTIA conducted its August 1997 survey, Native American ownership of AM radio stations decreased by one and Native American ownership of FM radio stations decreased by two. Thomas Atcitty, President of The Navajo Nations, owns one AM and one FM radio station, which are both located in Window Rock, AZ.
