All Hazard Warnings System: Storm Ready ISP

At the July roundtable, the Internet Service Provider (ISP) representative Cronan O'Connell of the ISP Business Forum (ISPBF) was challenged to come up with new ways to use technology to deliver hazard warnings. ISPBF asked its membership for a volunteer to come up with a new service to respond to the government challenge and Front Range Internet of Fort Collins, CO., took up the task.

Front Range created an Internet service where if a local hazard warning is issued by the Commerce Department's National Weather Service (NWS), people using Front Range's connection to the Web will hear an alarm over their computer and see a pop-up window displaying the warning.

Front Range created a "Storm Ready ISP" homepage at www.stormreadyisp.com. Then, on November 1, 2000, NTIA held a news conference and demonstrated Front Range Internet's warning system.

A week later, Jeng Mao of the Public Safety Program, represented NTIA at ISPCON in San Jose, CA. ISPCON is a conference of ISP and ISP related companies. ISPBF showcased Storm Ready ISP at the conference and Mr. Mao and Jamie Hawkins of NWS presented an ISPBF award to Front Range Internet for its work on this pilot program.
