*** MEDIA ADVISORY ***

Washington - Government and industry representatives will present to federal government experts new wireless technologies that could be used by federal law enforcement agencies that deal with public safety at a meeting of the Wireless Innovations in Communications Initiative (WICI) Committee on September 26, 2000. The meeting is in response to presentations made by the Federal Law Enforcement Users Group (FLEWUG), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on Aug. 8, 2000. Representatives from Qualcomm, Lumenix, Vanu, National Roadside Assistance Association and NASA will be giving presentations.

Government and industry presentations should describe new technologies that could: increase spectrum efficiency; allow for interoperability; enhance switching technology; improve system architectures; or describe potential commercial service applications. Presenters will have twenty minutes to make presentations and ten minutes to answer questions from Committee members. Industry representatives interested in giving a presentation are asked to contact Clement Townsend at 202-482-1028.

WICI, an initiative of the Commerce Department=s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), is designed to provide a venue for the federal government to promote innovative thinking in the development and utilization of new communications technologies. Specific goals of the WICI are to identify new wireless technologies and new spectrum management approaches that will enable federal users to satisfy their communications needs more effectively and efficiently, and to encourage private sector innovation and greater public/private cooperation. The WICI Committee, established as an ad hoc committee of the Interdepartment Radio Advisory Committee, is composed of senior experts from various federal government agencies. The WICI Committee is hosting a series of meetings in which representatives from federal agencies have the opportunity to discuss their communications needs. Additional meetings will be held to allow industry representatives to respond to agency presentations and present new technology developments to Committee members.
