Douglas A. Barker is vice president and
chief information officer of The
Nature Conservancy, an international conservation
organization with more than 1 million members and 1,400
preserves in 300 locations — the largest system
of private nature sanctuaries in the world. Mr. Barker
has advanced the smart use of technology to connect these
disparate staff people and support their on-the-ground
conservation efforts. He is leading an ambitious effort,
in active partnership with business leaders, to leverage
the power of information technology to conserve the Earth's
Last Great Places.
From 1985 to 1993, Mr. Barker served as manager of
business systems consulting at Andersen Consulting/Arthur
Andersen & Company, where he directed systems planning
and development projects centered around providing
state-of-the-art technological solutions to complex
business problems. Mr. Barker was also a faculty member
of Arthur Andersen's systems installation training
program.
Before joining Arthur Andersen, Mr. Barker served
as project manager and research and development specialist
at Applied Behavioral & Cognitive Sciences, Inc., where
he was responsible for all aspects of the nonprofit
organization's operations. Prior to that, he spent
four years as a research supervisor at the Navy Personnel
Research and Development Center in San Diego.
Mr. Barker currently serves as an editorial advisor
for CIO magazine, a monthly international publication
for information executives. He is a graduate of San
Diego State University, where he received his BA in
1980 and his MBA in 1984. An Oregon native, he was
raised in Oregon, Illinois, and California and now
resides in Washington, DC.
