Mario Morino’s career spans 35 years
as a business leader, social entrepreneur, and authority
on the Internet and information technology. Currently,
he is Chairman of the Morino
Institute, a nonprofit organization he founded in
1994 to empower people and communities to make positive
economic and social change through the use of the Internet.
Mario is also a Special Partner to General
Atlantic Partners, LLC, the world's largest private
equity investment firm focused exclusively on Internet
and information technology investments on a global basis.
Prior to establishing the Morino Institute, Mario
enjoyed a 30-year stint in the information technology
industry during its developing years. In 1973, he
co-founded Morino Associates, a computer software
firm that through a merger became LEGENT Corporation
in 1989. LEGENT was acquired in 1995 in what was
at the time one of the largest transactions in the
computer software and services industry.
As the Chair of the Morino Institute, Mario helped
create a number of initiatives: the Potomac
KnowledgeWay Project, an organization that built
awareness within the National Capital Region of the
region’s potential as a technological power
in the New Economy; Netpreneur.org,
which developed a vibrant community of Internet entrepreneurs
in the National Capital region; the Youth
Development Collaborative (YDC) Pilot, which
explored how to integrate the Internet and related
technologies into community based organizations serving
youth in the National Capital Region; and, most recently, Venture
Philanthropy Partners, Inc., an effort to demonstrate
the potential of venture philanthropy to increase
the level and effectiveness of philanthropic giving.
He is a Trustee at Case Western Reserve University
and sits on a number of boards including the Internet
Policy Institute, the Council
on Competitiveness, the National
Commission on Entrepreneurship, and Proxicom,
Inc.
