Our public access computers are close to the circulation desk, so the staff can easily monitor their use. Our internet use policy clearly states rules of use, and if these are not followed, the patron loses his internet privileges forever. In the beginning, we had a few problems, but once the public saw that we were paying attention, the problems are very rare. The filters that I have seen and heard about from fellow librarians do not provide complete safety for the children, but do screen out legitimate searches. The cost of filtering systems that allow more control by the librarian is cost prohibitive and time-consuming to set up. Overall, our method has worked well in our community, and I really do not want to have to filter. Karen Gillespie Grayson County Public Library library2@creative-net.net CC: Jhendrix@alawash.org
