The National Telecommunications and Information Administration's August 1998 survey of minority ownership of full service commercial radio and television stations in the United States indicates that Hispanic radio ownership is at 1.2 percent. According to the U.S. Census Bureau statistics released July 30, 1998, Hispanics represent 11.2 percent of the total U.S. population. Hispanics currently own 130 of 10,315 commercial AM radio and FM radio stations in the United States. These 130 stations are located in 15 states around the country. Forty Hispanic-owned commercial radio stations are located in California, the largest number of Hispanic-owned stations in any one state - - 34 Hispanic-owned commercial radio stations are located in Texas, the second largest number of Hispanic-owned stations in a single state.
Hispanics currently own 84 (1.8%) of 4,724 commercial AM radio stations in the United States. Hispanic ownership of AM radio stations has increased by four stations since 1997. Hispanic ownership of AM radio stations increased most significantly in Maryland and Texas. Amador Bustos, President of Z Spanish Radio Network owns12 AM radio stations, the largest number of commercial AM radio stations owned by any Hispanic broadcaster.
Hispanics currently own 46 (.8%) of 5,591 commercial FM radio stations in the United States. Hispanic ownership of FM radio stations has increased by a total of 12 stations since 1997. Hispanic ownership of FM radio stations increased most significantly in California where Hispanics own 19 FM radio stations; in Florida where Hispanics own three FM radio stations (In 1997 there was one Hispanic-owned FM radio station in the state of Florida); and Texas where Hispanics own a total of 16 FM radio stations. Amador Bustos, President of Z Spanish Radio Network owns 15 FM radio stations, the largest number of FM commercial radio stations owned by any Hispanic broadcaster. He also is the largest Hispanic group owner, with 29 stations.
According to this year's survey, there are 56 Hispanic commercial radio station owners in the United States, 33 of these owners are single station owners who collectively own 30 AM radio and three commercial FM radio stations and 23 are group owners. Only one of the 24 group owners have more than ten stations.
