IPv6

Part of NTIA's mission is to convene stakeholders to address today's critical communications and technology issues. One of these issues is the adoption and deployment of Internet Protocol version six (IPv6).

Every device that connects to the Internet, such as computers, smartphones, and smart grids, require an IP address. IPv6 is an Internet addressing system designed to expand the number of IP addresses available because the current supply will eventually exhaust. The IPv6 transition is critical to the continued growth of the Internet. While industry action and planning are needed, consumers do not need to take action to prepare for the IPv6 transition.

I’ve had the pleasure of attending many Cable Shows over the years and I am especially pleased to attend the inaugural show for your new President and CEO, Michael Powell. I had the great fortune to get to know Michael when he served as a Federal Communications Commissioner back when I worked for Chairman Kennard and he is a first-rate guy. Abstract

The U. S. Department of Commerce has released the final report on the technical and economic issues related to IPv6 adoption in the United States, including the appropriate role of government, international interoperability, security in transition, and costs and benefits of IPv6 deployment. The report was developed by the IPv6 Task Force, led by NTIA and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
