Today, we are launching a new privacy multistakeholder process on commercial use of facial recognition technology. Facial recognition technology uses software to help identify a person based on a digital image.
NTIA congratulates the winners of the 2013 Digital Cities awards, which recognize cities for the innovative use of technology to expand access to government services, promote citizen engagement, increase transparency, reduce costs and improve the lives of residents. The Center for Digital Government, a research and advisory firm focused on technology in state and local government, gave out the awards at the National League of Cities annual conference in Seattle last month.
This post is part of our “Spotlight on NTIA” blog series, which is highlighting the work that NTIA employees are doing to advance NTIA’s mission of promoting broadband adoption, finding spectrum to meet the growing demand for wireless technologies, and ensuring the Internet remains an engine for innovation and economic growth.
Just as more Americans are finding broadband essential to life at work and home, most businesses also need high-speed Internet service to remain competitive. The nation has made good headway in efforts to expand broadband access to work places, according to a new report from the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and Economic and Statistics Administration (ESA).

“I want to congratulate Tom Wheeler on his confirmation as the nation’s next FCC Chairman and Michael O’Rielly, who will be joining Tom at the commission. I look forward to working with Tom and the commission on key issues that will grow our economy and create jobs. These include making more spectrum available for commercial broadband and expanding broadband access and adoption, especially to the nation’s students and schools.”
WASHINGTON - "We thank the FCC for issuing its Order implementing technical and operational rules for FirstNet. Unification of the technical service requirements consolidates and streamlines regulatory requirements applicable to the public safety broadband network. We also applaud the FCC's actions in lifting the freeze on device certifications, paving the way for certification of devices in Band 14. This will enable vendors to ship products capable of operating over the FirstNet network in the near future."
The United States recently celebrated Hispanic-American Heritage Month. And as we continue to reflect on the many contributions Hispanic Americans have made to our country, NTIA has been working hard to ensure Hispanics and other minorities are obtaining the digital skills they need to better compete in a global economy that is increasingly reliant on technology.
WASHINGTON – The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) today voted to establish Northern Virginia as its corporate headquarters and the Boulder, Colorado area as its technical, engineering and network design headquarters.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will co-host an Innovative Spectrum Sharing Technology Day on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. This public event will showcase advances in spectrum sharing technologies and other innovations and initiatives aimed at satisfying the nation’s surging demand for wireless services, devices, and applications.
Meeting Americans’ increasing demand for broadband wireless technologies requires finding more spectrum. NTIA has been leading efforts to help meet President Obama’s goal of identifying 500 megahertz of spectrum for wireless broadband by 2020 while balancing the spectrum needs of federal agencies.
Washington - Less than eight months after launching the effort, the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) today announced that 54 states and territories have been awarded $116 million in grants in fiscal year 2013 to help them plan for the national public safety broadband network to be built by the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet), an independent authority within NTIA.
With the Internet on our phones, our tablets, at the office and in our homes, most Americans have come to expect that our government, too, will be online. Still, whether it’s due to a lack of resources or skepticism over the need, some local governments have yet to fully embrace the potential of e-Government.
WASHINGTON – Citing the need for greater competition and consumer choice in the marketplace for wireless services, the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) today formally petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to require wireless carriers to unlock mobile phones, tablets, and other devices for use with other carriers upon request.
