Statement from Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information and NTIA Administrator Lawrence E. Strickling on the agreement between the Federal Communications Commission and wireless carriers on cell phone unlocking:

"NTIA welcomes the agreement of the nation’s major wireless operators to allow consumers to use their mobile devices on any compatible network they choose. We look forward to reviewing the details of the agreement and hope that its implementation will resolve the issues we raised in our petition to the FCC.”

Today, we are launching a new privacy multistakeholder process on commercial use of facial recognition technology.  Facial recognition technology uses software to help identify a person based on a digital image.

NTIA congratulates the winners of the 2013 Digital Cities awards, which recognize cities for the innovative use of technology to expand access to government services, promote citizen engagement, increase transparency, reduce costs and improve the lives of residents. The Center for Digital Government, a research and advisory firm focused on technology in state and local government, gave out the awards at the National League of Cities annual conference in Seattle last month.

WASHINGTON - "We thank the FCC for issuing its Order implementing technical and operational rules for FirstNet. Unification of the technical service requirements consolidates and streamlines regulatory requirements applicable to the public safety broadband network.  We also applaud the FCC's actions in lifting the freeze on device certifications, paving the way for certification of devices in Band 14.  This will enable vendors to ship products capable of operating over the FirstNet network in the near future."

This public event will showcase advances in spectrum sharing technologies and other innovations and initiatives aimed at satisfying the nation’s surging demand for wireless services, devices, and applications.

Meeting Americans’ increasing demand for broadband wireless technologies requires finding more spectrum. NTIA has been leading efforts to help meet President Obama’s goal of identifying 500 megahertz of spectrum for wireless broadband by 2020 while balancing the spectrum needs of federal agencies.

Washington - Less than eight months after launching the effort, the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) today announced that 54 states and territories have been awarded $116 million in grants in fiscal year 2013 to help them plan for the national public safety broadband network to be built by the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet), an independent authority within NTIA.
