NTIA’s Institute for Telecommunication Sciences and Department of Defense Select 5G Challenge Stage Two Winners and Stage Three Contestants

WASHINGTON – Today, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) Institute for Telecommunication Sciences (ITS) in Boulder, Colorado, in collaboration with the Department of Defense (DoD), announced 5G Challenge Stage Two winners and Stage Three contestants. This prize competition aims to accelerate the adoption of open interfaces, interoperable components, and multi-vendor solutions toward the development of an open 5G ecosystem. 

Stage Two Winners – Emulated Integration Prize 

Each Stage Two winner will receive a $150,000 prize. Winning contestants who met the minimum performance threshold during Stage Two are:  

Central Unit (CU) 

  • Capgemini Engineering 
  • Mavenir Systems, Inc. 
  • Signal System Management 

Distributed Unit (DU) 

  • Radisys Corp.

Radio Unit (RU) 

  • Fujitsu Network Communications 
  • Mavenir Systems, Inc. 

The above contestants are qualified for the Stage Two best Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) prize. One contestant will be selected to receive the $200,000 “Best SBOM” prize, which will be announced along with final 5G Challenge winners this fall. 

Stage Three Contestants – Network Integration Prize 

Each Stage Three contestant has an opportunity to win $250,000. In accordance with the updated Official Rules, contestants selected for Stage Three are:

  • CU: Capgemini Engineering 
  • DU: Radisys, Inc.
  • RU: Mavenir Systems, Inc.

About the 5G Challenge 

In this 2022 first-year 5G Challenge Preliminary Event, ITS will award part of the total $3 million prize purse to contestants who submit winning hardware and/or software solutions for one or more of CU, DU, and RU 5G network subsystems. The rules, location, and details of the second-year event will be released in 2023.
